St. Thomas Soccer Cup
As usual every year November is the month of St. Thomas
Soccer Cup, this year celebrating its 16th edition. We as a school,
got invited in the 7th grade male category. We had our first game
Friday, November 14th versus Colegio Mundo Integral. This was our
opening match and the players got a little nervous, but what a way to get rid
of that feeling then by winning 4 goals to 0. The next day, on Saturday, we
faced the actual champions of this category Mundo Maria Montessori. This being
the last game of the group stages meant the winner would pass in first place of
the group, after Colegio Mundo Integral lost both games. After an incredible
game from our boys, the game ended with a score of 1 goal to 0 in favor of
Mundo Maria Montessori.
With a record of 1 win and 1 loss, we passed to second and
had to face the locals St. Thomas in the semifinals. The kids were very nervous
because of the team we were facing. A week passed, and Saturday came bringing
with it the semifinals. With most of the crowd against us, the team got over
that and gave one of the best games I have seen them play. At the end of the 40
minutes the score was tied, 1 all, and up came the penalty shootout, which we
ended up winning giving us access to the much wanted finals. In the finals, we
faced Mundo Maria Montessori once again, but this time our boys had a different
mentality and a confidence boost obtained from the win in the semifinals the
day before.
The finals started, and our boys gave it everything they had,
and at the end of the 40 minutes the game was tied to 0, even though we created
a lot more chances then the rivals. As per the tournament rules, came the
penalty shootout that would decide the champions. At this stage, nervousness
came to play and we ended up getting second place in the category.
What makes this second place a first for SEK is the fact the
majority of the team were fifth grade students playing against boys two years
older. Although the age and height
difference was substantial, we managed to play a remarkable tournament and achieved
a second place with a fist place flavor, at least for SEK.
I would like to thank all the family members who went to the
games to give support. This shows what a big family we are at SEK, and to the boys
who gave everything they had in each game and made the school’s name fly high.
GO SEK!!
